Kanjo are employed by counties in Kenya and each county pays specific salary. Nairobi County is the highest paying County in Kenya and they pay Ksh 20,000 to Ksh 25,000 as starting salary. The County Askaris who have been in the county for more than 5 years earn Ksh 30,000 and above monthly. One of my friends was employed at Nairobi County in 2013, he now earns Ksh 54,000 monthly.

Apart from the salary they earn, most askaris get bribes from traders. An Askari can earn a basic salary of Ksh 25,000 but if you add the amount they get from traders and matatus, the income can be as high as Ksh 40,000 monthly.

Below are the salaries of Kanjos in Kenya based on Counties:

Nairobi County—Ksh 25,000 to Ksh 50,000 per month

Mombasa County—Ksh 18,000 to Ksh 40,000 per month

Kisumu County—Ksh 18,000 to Ksh 35,000 per month
